REFLECTIONS OF DREAMS

Reflections of Dreams tells the story of a man who endeavors to define the essence of his being as he journeys through significant turning points in time. Beginning with the psychological portrayal of violent, uninvited dreams as the center stage for the transitional process of believing in God and dreams to believing in nature and reality, the main character, Sal, plunges into the deepest recesses of the mind and delves into the very nature of dreams to tease out the stuff they are made of. The more he refuses to believe in dreams, the more he is drawn to them as the images from his dreams apparently unravel into reality. As he trains his mind to sever any association it forms regarding unrelated events, he discovers a web of associated networks hardwired to the core of humanity’s belief system. This epiphany leads him to a profounder concept of what it means to be human. Stepping out of his Gnostic shoes and setting foot on his new ground of belief, he stumbles upon a deeper side of human nature. The thought of the fabric of his skin being genetically recombined thousands of times through wars and massacres makes him reflect on his own humanity, where not only nature is deaf and blind but the past is also mute.

While people and situations lie juxtaposed, craftily depicted as the image reflected in the mirror: dreams and reality, family and society, nature and civilization, love and belief, the triad of things is mutually embedded to convey the importance and arbitrariness of perspective, like ‘here’ and ‘there’ and the ‘in-between’ space that has no boundaries. Though they seem to come in pairs and may appear antagonistic in nature, the third element is the driving force and serves to give meaning, like life and death, time and space, learning and memory. Death makes life both meaningful and meaningless. Whether death is a continuous process of life or the end of it is a matter of perspective. In his final analysis, Sal seeks to uncover the ultimate reality in a game of cause and effect and comes across two angles: science and religion in search of the truth (the third angle), each with its own perspective approach; one through proof, the other through faith in a seemingly perfect triangle in the grand scheme of things.
